A couple of weeks ago I had the chance to get another Mich. State Police
back-up, no dash, M649, which quickly turned into a package deal for two.

A week later I went back for one of the two M38's that I had the
chance at when getting the 649's. So much for self-control

The first 649 I picked up is shown on the lower right, now, instead of
the "lamo-camo" grips shown in the previous photo's it's wearing
some old S&W rosewoods, both stamped inside with serial no.
103, which means they could date back to 1950-51.

The Model 38 Airweight is kind of a mystery in that the serial no. has it being
shipped in August 1968, according to Mr.Jinks, but the barrel isn't pinned.
The serial # on the bbl is the same as found on the outside bottom of the
grip frame with no other obvious repair stamps found anywhere else on the frame.
The Trooper who carried it was issued the gun in 1984-85
& relied on it as his back-up during his 25 yr. career.

No matter, the M38 has now taken it's position next to the "first" M649
as one of my primary carry guns so both are back to doing what
they had done for so many years, gettin' around.....
