I bought the wood for the looks. That's why I stayed away from the checkered. The grain shows better in the smooth. I found that I grip just as well with smooth after I got them. They are fatter than the stock grips. For range work I actually like them better. For CCW or if your using in a defensive mode I would go with the rubber.
