Whatever you do, have a good gunsmith or really talented amateur do the work. Either way, you'll end up with something different that hopefully you will really like. Just remember though that anything you do will probably lessen the value of the original unless you find someone who shares your taste. I've seen really good custom work by a known smith go begging at what the original should have been worth. That said a lot of my revolvers have visible custom work, predominantly having been round butted before everything came that way.
