The NYT ran an editorial earlier this week stating that the US is unique among wealthy countries for the prevalence of guns and consequent high murder rate. It also argued that places like England and Australia, with their stricter gun controls, have successfully reduced their murder rates.
This article is a rebuttal, pointing out, for example, that Russia has 1/10th our rate of gun ownership but four times our murder rate, and that while homicides by
firearms are down in England and Australia, the murder rate itself is unaffected by stricter gun control. It is a good read:
