Old thread but I can't resist, I inherited my dad's Husky made S&W 1640, I was just a kid but with him when he bought it new at the mall liquor store circa '66.

The 1640s are fine weapons ... small ring mausers of the "improved" pattern. Craftsmanship is superb, their only flaw is a hard trigger on the order of about 8 lbs. I shot my first deer and my best deer with that rifle. They were the "mountain rifles" of their day. Pretty lightweight with slender barrels, bottom metal of aluminum and stocks with just enough wood to be comfy. I can't imagine what it would it would take to make me part with mine.
