I eventually ended up with both, but before I knew that would happen I bought the 8-3/8" 460. That was my first choice on the grounds often mentioned above: availability of a wide variety of commercial ammo.

A year or so later I found an almost new 4" 500 with its case on the consignment shelf in a San Diego gun store. I bought it on the spot.

I like them both, but the preference shifts from gun to gun over time. Funny thing, it's not the caliber that determines which I like more on a given day, but the barrel length.
