I am not sure about that. I own guns for one reason, personal defense. When the squishy brown stuff hits the rotary air acceleration device, I want to know exactly what I am going to use to defend me and my family. For that reason, I keep the selection of guns I use at a minimum, no fumbling to adjust to different grips, different sizes, different ammo. I can respond quickly and decisively. This is just me, YMMV.

have carried a 4" K-frame or a 1911 for 12 hours. Was wishing for a J-frame the whole day.

This is where I have landed. The J-Magnum frame is close enough to the K-frame in size that they both handle about the same. The 642 is great to carry, the K-frames are available at home. The L-frame would serve about the same (only one is available at each "station" in the house so no confusing decisions to make).
