If she won't use a gun because she can't stand the thought of hurting someone she probably won't use any gun as demonstrated in the last incident. So to me it looks like she needs a bullet proof security system and a trained large dog.

All that aside she probably could use some gun training classes that stress personal security and why a gun is the best form of protection and perhaps the only option.

A complex problem with no easy answer.
