Buying a vehicle, new or used, is not painful for me.
a) I know what I want.
b) I do my homework and know what the fair price is.
c) If I'm trading, I never give them my keys or let them drive my vehicle unless I accompany them.
d) I tell the salesman I only have 15 minutes to talk.........then I'll walk............and I do it.

With me being an old geezer, sales people expect me to be "crotchedy",............I'm fully capable of doing that, but don't unless provoked.
