All a matter of perspective... In 1951 that waffle top collectable was just another rifle and adding a scope improved it.
I modify any and all of my firearms such that they make me happy. Some future collector may wring his hands at the travesty of cutting a 5 inch half lug HiViz for moons. Let him.
A few more dollars in my estate will not make up for a lifetime of pleasures lost.
