For backup, with the main issues being nuisances like coyotes and human predators, the .38 with a standard velocity or +P SWC will do just fine if you do your part. While I rarely carry a revolver for serious purposes, my K38 loaded like that would be satisfactory in your setting (and better for me cuz my eyes need the bigger sights). I would be surprised if your PP will be approved and issued before the hunting season is over. Mine (upstate) took most of 6 months as I recall, 35-ish years ago.
