Default Explanation please

I searched for this and didn't find a result, so if it's been discussed, my sincere apologies.

The first handgun I owned (and still have) was the Smith & Wesson Model 686-3. I know S&W manufactured MANY variants of the 686, but specifically what does the "-3" indicate for my specific model? I've searched the internet and really didn't find anything.

Thanks!!
