Guess that recoil being talked about would be the recoil the XD-S in the 45acp flavor generates, not the 9mm.
I'd expect the XD-S in 9mm to have less recoil than a Shield 9 since the XD-S 9mm (23oz) is a few ounces heavier than the Shield (19oz).
That little extra weight and slightly wider grip dimensions (especially in the front of the grip) the XD-S has over the Shield are some things that could contribute to why you consider the XD-S 9mm more accurate for you than the Shield.
