Thanks for the reply. Ill find the right place for my questions but so you'll know, there are no letters with any of the numbers. The 712706 is found on the butt and on the end of the cylinder.
Without a factory letter, about the best that can be said about dating is that yours was shipped sometime during 1941. There is little correlation between SN and shipping dates at that time. S&W was just getting cranked up for massive wartime production in 1940-41, and things were confused then. Does yours have adjustable target sights? That would be highly unlikely for that time. I suspect yours, if chambered in .38 Special, is simply a Military and Police (M&P) model.
