Since I use a 260 grain cast bullet at 1000 fps for Ohio Whitetailed deer, I think what you are considering would work.

I have not shot an Ohio whitetail with the 45-70 but I have shot a couple of Kentucky, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania ones. The 330 Gould bullet and black powder did a fine job on them.

The big heavy chunk of lead does not need a lot of speed. It just seems to get the job done.
