I agree the HK VP 70 has a historical significance being the first functional polymer pistol by a large margin. And the full auto rate of fire : 2'200 shots/min . Still not very pretty though in my opinion, but then neither were the first Glocks (we just got used to them as they are gazillions now).

Yep, the P9S has grown on me - such that I occasionally suffer from the idea of seeking out the .45 cal version
To me the VP70z looks like a science-fiction ray gun - so while definitely not "pretty" it has always had an odd appeal to me. (I know you're a wood grip guy, so I can see the VP would be the antithesis of that!) Not a gun I plan to give up - though I shoot it VERY rarely
ETA: I should have mentioned the unique optical illusion front sight also ... another innovative (if not popular) feature of the VP70.
