Linda: I'm very interested in the whistle shown in your post # 29. Does it have any markings? My father carried the one shown during WW I. He was a corporal, a Lewis Gun squad leader, and needed to signal above the roar of battle. This one can be heard for a a quarter mile in the quiet of the country; when I was a boy it summoned me home when dinner was ready and I was out in the woods. It's marked J. Hudson & Co Birmingham, (England, as he was with the British Army), 1916, and there's a broad arrow stamp on the leather.
