Back when the CS45 was still a welded-up prototype (S&W built the .45 first, followed by the 9mm and .40) I was shooting sporting clays with the S&W engineers on the project. They brought me in to check it out and get my opinion.

I told them I liked the gun but hated the grips. Everything got silent and all the engineers had a look on their faces like I just kicked their dog. It was a look of utter disbelief. They told me that the engineers had Hogue design the grips in a shape that most people liked and they designed the rest of the gun around them. I told them they are too bulky and the worst material you can have on a carry gun is soft rubber to catch on your clothes.

They could have cared less that I liked the gun as a whole. All they kept repeating was "I can't believe he didn't like the grips."
