You have to read these threads with some sense of context. Hundred of thousand of Shields have been produced since the original posting, and S&W (like any decent manufacturer) rolls product improvements into the line if they want to stay in business. Occurrences of this problem today are highly unusual.

I have a 9mm NTS Shield I bought Thanksgiving weekend, build date of April 2015. It is now my EDC.
I am 67 and stopped bragging on hand strength long ago, but, I can rack the slide and lock it back normally AND just a few minutes ago loaded the 8th round into the 8 round magazine with bare hands !?!
The pistols has about 600 rounds of mostly cheap, but name brand ammo through it with ZERO problems of any kind. Also ate my EDC ammo which is Hornady Critical Defense 115g.
I'm happy (and honest)....wish everyone was.
By the way, anyone who has trouble racking a Shield should try the Ruger SR9c. They won't be able to move the slide, let alone lock it back.
