What a wonderful gift of history.
The facility in question was known in WW2 as the Mare Island Navy Yard. Located in San Francisco Bay at Vallejo it was once one of the most important West coast naval facilities. It's name changed somewhat over the years and the Yard has been closed for quite a while.
