My grandfather painted all his tools orange. He did it for two reasons. First, the paint cut down on potential rust. Second, it makes them easy to find. I still have several of them. Most of the paint is worn off, but they're still easy to find and still rust free.

The upper looks like a perfect example of an FDE AR that has seen plenty of use. However, the lower doesn't meet your goals. It looks like a black lower with some white paint on it. Not really distressed.
I'm actually kind of surprised. The upper shows a tremendous amount of skill in achieving the vision. I would love to see you take another shot at the lower. I think you got just a little too much on there to make it looked distressed. It looks painted.
Still, a good job.
I do prefer to stress mine the old fashioned way though.
