Terms like lemon squeezer and ladysmith are collector terms and never used by the company. There are also several terms that S&W used in their early literature and no one really knows why. If I were to hazard a guess, I would say that it was to differentiate themselves from their largest competitor in CT.
Crane is yoke
Checkering is checking
Grips are stocks
Once the company left family control, some of these industry terms crept in and you will see checkering and grips used by the company today. They have also recycled the collectors term Ladysmith and called one of the Model 36's the Lady Smith. They have recently come out with a .22 called the Victory model which for years was a post WWII .38 special commemorating victory in WWII and even had the unique "V" prefix in the serial number.
Unfortunately, nothing is sacred anymore but the few purist collectors still attempt to keep these original S&W terms alive.
