First off, my EDC is a 96-year old Schrade switch-blade that was a gift from a good friend with the instructions, "I want you to
use this!" And I do every day and touch up the blade almost every night.
But in the situation the OP described where the knife would be used as a weapon also, I'd probably add a fixed-blade knife. Which one? Well, I have a few nice Randall knives that are all users and would definitely fit the bill, but if "push came to shove," I'd probably go with the fixed-blade in the picture below. It was made by my oldest son and given to me one Christmas. The steel is AUS8 with a ¼-inch spine and a 5-inch, full tang, blade.
This is one of those "been there, done that" knives that has tackled every job from slicing camp bacon to whittling shavings for the campfire to boning out an elk. It holds an edge exceptionally well and touches up without a lot of effort. Yep, I think I'd go with this one.
