I too love the looks of blued steel and checkered wood (usually, but not always walnut)!!! There have been some really nice examples above...thanks to all who have shared!!

Here's a couple from 1925, which in my opinion is right in the middle of the golden age for both Smith and Wesson and Colt, as well as some of the great rifle makers... Two Colts, a 1903 .32 ACP, and a 1908 .25 ACP:
