If you do a lot of rapid fire shooting, the barrel can get quite warm indeed. Replacement hand guards with a metal heat shield liner are readily available. I picked up a "used" pair at a gun store that was going out of business for $12. The gun shop owner had taken them off new guns because the customers wanted a "sexier" looking handguard.
