I liked it too. My wife commented afterward, "I didn't realize [the prelude to war] had been so complicated." I agreed with her. I had no idea, for instance, that Ho Chi Minh had such a long history as a Vietnamese nationalist going back to before World War I and that he was actively supported by the United States for a time during World War II. But for Truman's choice to support the French in trying to re-establish their pre-war domination of Indochina, who knows what might have happened or what might have been avoided. Interesting, too, that Ho quoted Thomas Jefferson when addressing the Vietnamese people after Vietnam had achieved independence from the French. His Viet Minh supporters, including his future general, Giap, were a ruthless and violent bunch, though -- burying people alive, among other things. That country endured an awful lot of war before we ever came on the scene. Reminded me of Afghanistan in that way.
