While it's true that any lube is better than no lube, they don't all work equally well, as you imply. Some gum-up after time. Some are too thick for cold weather or a particularly tight weapon. Some are too thin, and run off or sling off too easily. Some provide better long term corrosion resistence than others.
And, grease IS preferable to oil on stainless rails, as it stays in place far better, and therefore protects better against the galling that stainless is vulnerable to (as referenced way back in post #2 by Bruce Lee M.)
