All load 38spl brass to what ever the requirement is. (158grn doing 780fps get you there normally) Shorter brass loads faster.
I haven't loaded magnum brass for my pistols in a long time. I have for my marlin. But still don't shoot it much.

Not sure what kind of match your "competitors" are shooting, but in Cowboy the 38's are still loaded to .357 Mag COL, which is an aberration with the bullet sticking out well beyond the crimp groove. This is required by the lever and Lightning rifles' actions.
