Regular contact cement from the can, spread thin. There did not appear to be damage when I peeled off the first set - the ones that resemble a 1911. Reapplying the glue for the second set just re-activated the stickiness. I think the second set looks rather like brown stained bone. They feel much more natural because they are beveled as well as distressed, with highs and lows. Plus, they closely follow the original grip outlines.

If you think it's unusual, you should see what I just did to my new 2.0 Compact. I ground off the bayonet lug under the chin. Much more to my liking, since I have no desire to add a "here I am, come and get me" beacon.
