It only seems foolish because you haven't thought outside your own little bubble.
When I do long day-hikes or backpacking trips deep into the wilderness areas, my G20SF is usually only carrying 10 rounds in the 15 round mag. The weight saved is pretty minimal but it's weight saved. Lugging a heavy pack through steep terrain sounds easy from the armchair, but being nine hours deep into the wilderness, without even trails to help, is a lot tougher than most realize.
