I have every barrel length between 3"-7" in a 686.
I'm currently shooting a 66-8 4.25" with a red dot and it may actually be more accurate than a 686. I'm actually shooting it again this weekend. I like all its features; tensioned 2 piece barrel. Ball detent. K frame. 36oz. + the weight of the scope. It's a 6 shot. You don't mind shooting 6 accurate shots. 9mm 124gr 38 short colt cases. Starline brass.
