I was issued 5.11s when I was a police advisor in Afghanistan. Up until then, I was more of a Wrangler blue jean kinda guy. Since retiring from LE, I usually carry a .38 Colt Agent. It pocket carries very nicely in the 5.11s. I carry a speed loader in my strong side cargo pocket. I often have a point and shoot camera in a cargo pocket. My Benchmade auto knife is clipped in a strong side rear pocket.
My 5.11s usually last 7-8 years. Oh, I heard that the rear strap was for hanging a walkie/talkie.
One last observation: Men wear trousers, women wear pants. Seems like I remember a gunnery sergeant telling me that a long, long time ago.
