I'd be inclined to put it back in the same condition and then try tapping it repeatedly against a soft pine board from different directions (OK a nylon or leather mallet will work too if you're anti-bubba) to see if you can get it to slip off. But I'd still feel better sending it back for a recheck. Actually, if I was sure about what you reported, certain it wasn't a noise caused by something else in the room, I'd have a hard time trusting that gun for a long time unless Smith found and fixed a problem that would explain the occurrence.
