When I went through the police academy in 1979, it was loops or drop boxes. Speed loaders weren't allowed. No semi-autos either. My duty gun was a 6 1/2" M27 .44 Special conversion. However, I took a 4" M19 that I had round butted to the academy. I could have used my .44, but the PD gave me 500 rounds of .38 special. .44s I would have had to buy myself.
Not long after I graduated from the academy, I went out and bought .44 speed loaders and pouches.
