4586s are common. About 8 to 10 years ago police surplus 4586s were available from businesses like Bud's Gun Shop for $259 to $289. That does not make them any less of a gun and does not comment on the value of excellent condition 4586s, but they are not particularly "special."

My 4586 was $580 + ~8% sales tax new with night sights in 1996. The same year I bought a lightly used 1086 for $280 + tax. 1086s were not popular so their collector price went up. For a while the 1086 was worth 3 times as much as the 4586. The lesson might be do not take the crowd's advise here or elsewhere on what to buy. Worded differently today's unwanted turkeys are tomorrow's collector items.

Not long after my 4586 was made S&W quit making DAO slides and frames that were longer in the rear. The extra length allowed the hammer to be staged further back without it hanging out in the air. Consequently newer 4586s have a longer DA pull. That was not a good change IMO so newer "tactical" ones are worth less to me.
