There is a segment of the handgun industry for these types of guns, the most common name I've heard is "tactical trainer." S&W has the MP22, Walther has a couple models in .22lr, ATI/GSG makes 1911s, now Glock, plus all the conversion kits. Aside from the getting to practice with the same size gun in a cheaper ammo, .22's are just plain fun to shoot.
