I can't be held responsible for the Third Reich getting it wrong.

The original KAR 98A (note the capital A) had 17.7" barrel according to the one source I can dig out. I cannot confirm it as all the search engines in the world seem to lump "a" with "A", and the Kar 98a is really another short rifle.
