Caveat emptor in reverse sort of. I have more than once prevented vulnerable folks from selling something they shouldn't. In this case I would have probably done what you did no harm no foul unless it is hot. I doubt that as he would have known, or I think he would that paperwork would be involved most guns that are hot are sold on the street.
