Modern day Journalists are rarely well informed on anything. After all thorough investigation and fact-checking take much too long and you've got to get that article out as fast as possible to sell copies, get the ratings, and trend on Social Media.
It is for that very reason that I barely even follow the news anymore because it simply doesn't provide accurate information because everything is written in a huge hurry in the most dramatic fashion possible.

People think they lie and sometimes they do but mostly it's what you said. Speed trumps accuracy. They have to sensationalize everything and make it sound as bad as possible. That's why the weather people invented wind chills and heat indexes. Regular temperatures weren't good enough. I once heard a so-called meteorologist in the USA (I forget which city) exclaim dramatically that it was colder there than it was in Antarctica. Of course they didn't mention, it was winter there and it was summer in Antarctica.
