For Sale— Unique M&P “Fixed Sight Targets”
For Sale are two unique Smith and Wesson Military & Police .38 Specials that have been discussed quite a bit here in the Forum. They were formerly owned by SixgunStrumpet, a frequent contributor here, and I acquired them in a recent trade. They’re both wonderful guns but don’t really fall within my normal areas of collecting. Both guns have been professionally modified to “Fixed Sight Targets” and are believed to be the work of Frank Pachmayr, Los Angeles. Below are the descriptions per the Roy Jinks factory letters for each—
1) .38 Military and Police Model of 1905 Fourth Change, caliber .38 S&W Special, revolver in company records which indicate that your handgun, with serial number 754717, was shipped from our factory on March 25, 1941, and delivered to Mershon Co., Glendale, CA. The records indicate that this handgun was shipped with a 6 inch barrel, butt swivel, blue finish, and checkered walnut grips.

SOLD 2) .38 Military and Police, Post World War ll Long Action, S Serial Number series Variation, caliber .38 S&W Special, revolver in company records which indicate that your handgun, with serial number (S)833957 was shipped from our factory on August 22, 1946, and delivered to William Hoegee Co., Los Angeles, CA. The records indicate that the revolver was shipped with a 2 inch barrel, blue finish, and checkered black hard rubber round butt grips. This revolver was built with Pre-World War ll parts and the S was not stamped on the bottum of the butt with the serial number.
I have a printed copy of an email from Roy Jinks to a previous owner concerning the 2 inch gun’s serial number which reads “The S is under the grip (it’s on the side of the grip frame) and I believe these were the first group of 2 inch round butts produced after the war. Neat gun and a rare item. Roy”
