I’m a fan of 7.62x39 and it’s quite capable of humanely taking deer, but if you’re hunting over 150 yards or so you’d probably be better off with .308, and besides good .308 hunting loadings will likely be easier to come by, and in greater varieties.

The downside is you’d be dealing with a heavier rifle on your hunts.
