If I feel like I'm going to need to carry a firearm for personal safety, I reconsider and wisely avoid going. Although I have a carry permit, the only time I carry is on the way to the range and on the way back. Even then, I do not ever carry a loaded weapon except at the shooting range. "Just because I can..." is not sufficient justification.
