Semi autos require more frequent attention to cleaning, particularly semi auto rimfires. It doesn't hurt to keep any firearm clean at all times (That's how I roll
). If you're not into the whole cleaning every time you shoot thing, then clean if/when your semi auto rimfire rifle starts to malfunction, and/or, accuracy falls off.
