OK, especially in the day of the cell phone video, retreating-or attempting to-can be a good thing. Avoiding a confrontation beats the dickens out of the legal aftermath of self defense. As can finding a better place for any confrontation to happen.

I don't understand your belief that the duty to retreat-which has existed in a public place since our ancestors were literally owned by people they had to address as My Lord/Lady-bypasses any state requirement to obtain a purchase permit.
