For self defense against two-legged predators, a Model 10-5 is sufficient. Stoke it with a modern, +P 38 Special "short barrel" load, the Model 10 will handle it just fine, it won't blow up. If we are talking about defense against wild dogs, wolves, bears, etc., then I'd suggest a 357 Magnum as the minimum.
