On a historical note gold was only around $35 an ounce for decades, up through the 60's. I don't know what the carat weight of the "sight" gold was but just enough to avoid tarnishing has a rather small amount of gold to alloy mixture. For example 10 carat is nearly 50% gold the rest is alloy.
