I use the typical hard- or soft case for that and carry it into the hotel like everything else. I don't try to be discreet; I carry it in plain sight. If the hotel has an issue with it, they can come talk to me, but I damn sure won't leave it in the vehicle, in an unsecured parking lot, overnight. I can take my money somewhere else if it bothers them. So far, I've never had an issue.
Granted, haven't done that in D.C. or NY yet, but I would w/o hesitation.
