I wouldn't want to be the first to try this. The slip-fit of the barrel muzzle in the shroud ahead of the gas port appears to be how the system directs gas to the rear, cycling the action. What you propose would greatly reduce the length of this slip-fit. The slip-fit is only .75" long as it is. I think it would render your pistol inoperative.
