Savage Super Sporter. I am looking at possibly picked up one in 30-30. It is at an auction so I am not holding my breath. For some reason people seem to go BAT DOO DOO CRAZY when they are in an auction. I am still seeing primers going for $150+/- in auctions when you can find them in the $99 range.

From what I am seeing, there are 2 models of the Super Sporter, 40 and 45. If that is true, I think it is a model 45. Looks interesting but, not sure that I want to sink a ton of $$ into one. Anyone have one or maybe had one? When I look online all I see are RARE or SCARCE SSS in 30-06 or something like that.

I am not looking for a tac driver that will be sub moa at 500yrds, just looking for something interesting and thought this might fit the bill. I already reload for 30-30 in a lever action. The other thing that I might want to play around with is better bullets. The SSS is a mag fed rifle and could use pointy tipped bullets in 30 cal to see what could be.

I bought a Savage Super Sporter in 30-06 years ago and like it very much. It's a well-made, solid, basic, bolt-action hunting rifle. If you are looking for something cheaper and more available along those lines and want a 30-30, I'd suggest you consider a Savage 340 or a Stevens 325. They bear some similarities to the Super Sporter but are a less expensive, very handy little rifle.

The Model 45 will have checkering on the stock, considered the Deluxe model of the two. The Model 40 will not.
The M45 came from the factory with a Lyman rear adj aperture site plus the open rear bbl sight.

Nothing real note worth about the rifles I can think of. Pretty simple.
The recv'r is just a piece of round tubing with the loading port & bolt handle relief cuts into it.
The bolt locks up at the rear with 2 opposing lugs on the bolt. The bolt handle serves as the Safety Lug.

Stock had a Schauble forend tip that varied some depending on when the rifle was made. Just their wood shop employees making small changes at the sanding drums.

Stamped steel trigger guard and magazine floorplate all one piece. Don't loose the detachable magazine as they are generally hard to find (in 30-30) and $$.

I don't remember if they were factory D&T's for scopes but I wouldn't be surprised if they were.

The trigger is a simple 2 stage military style mechanism. Nothing fancy and non-adjustable.

These rifles were the larger editions of the Savage Model 1920 made to handle to larger(longer) cartridges.
A little better stock design than the 1920 and not exactly the same rifle.

They are kind of scarce,,especially the Model 45. But that doesn't really make them valuable.
Interesting would be a better way to put it I think.

Not much to break! Some parts around but you have to really search for them. Most repairs can be done using the orig parts.
Most owners say the rifles are very accurate. Savage/Stevens rifles are noted for accurately bored and chambered bbls so I don't doubt that at all.

I've never owned one personally. Did have a 1920 for a time and have cleaned up a couple of the Model 40 'deer rifles' in 30-06 for hunters..
Nothing to really say I could see wrong with them.

They are not Winchester M70's or Mauser 98 Factory Sporters,,but you know that going in.

My LGS has (or had, not sure if it's still there) one looks like new. He was asking $600 which I think is WAY too high, but there it is.

I am hoping for $375 + buyer premium. Looks like it might be the model 45 because it has checkering. Only interested because it is a 30-30.

I own one of these in 30-30, it is very accurate and I really like it. I shoots cast bullets very well. I posted a thread on it a few months ago.

You posted yours as a 340A. Looking online I am seeing something different. I have also looked up 40 and 45 and those look closer to what I am bidding on. It actually looks closer to the 45 because it has checkering.

On 3-19-2022 I started a thread on my Savage Super Sporter in 30-30. Not sure why it is not showing up for you.

Okay, I went 1 too far. I wish the one on the auction had the peep sight. Other than that, it looks good. I will post pics if I get it. I too am casting and loading my 30-30s.
