Is this holster for a Colt maybe? All I could get from the company was that it was part of a special order. A model 19 is a little sloppy and a 686 is tight like it was new. An attractive combination. The model 19 may appear nickel but it is blue, blinded by all the red/brown color.

You had holster aficionados in 3 different countries looking for Hume size number 6 with no success. None of my Hume catalogs show a size 6 and I haven’t come up with any reference to # 6.
Look at the inside of the holster where the rear sight sits, there may be an impression into the leather and may offer a clue as to whether the holster was made for a Colt or S&W.
Regards,

Sight impressions are consistent with a S&W and there is a hammer impression above the female snap that is also consistent with a S&W.

To clarify for others not in the original conversation....

The Don Hume fit code lists from the earliest any of us have to the latest do not list a number 6.

1-4 for S&W revolvers
5 for S&W Autos
7-9 for Colt revolvers - with 7 later including S&W L frame
10 for Colt GM autos
(Many more added in recent years.)

So what happened to six???

My inference was that there once was a 6 in the 1950's Hume galaxy, but whatever handgun 6 designated was no longer commonly holstered in the 1960's, so the number was dropped.

In the number sequence, 6 fit with Colt. Hmmm. A Colt no longer made after ...say 1941...but still in police service into the 50's.

I was disappointed that the L frame turned out to fit. Maybe it shrank....

OP's holster might have been mislabeled, but why would Hume have a stray 6 stamp lying around?

That the current Hume customer service would know that the holster was a special order, but not know for what detail is only slightly surprising given my experience with ammunition companies. (Per Red: The Bill Jordan picture indicates post-1982 production.)

If anyone has a Hume marked 6 for the fit code -- or better still, a catalog showing the mystery 6, we're eager to see it.

Leather being leather, it seems to me that it is possible that the holster was designed for a Colt but that an S&W rode in it for a long enough time so that it conformed to an S&W.

An interesting mystery for you holster experts!

Don Hume was THE police holster for decades, surely they made holsters for lots of revolvers. Dan Wesson or Ruger security six, maybe?

I didn't copy whole basic list that ran into the 80's.

Dan Wesson had code # 12; Ruger SS was included in # 1.

#11 - Browning 9 mm
#13 - Llama small frame autos
#14 - Llama revolvers

Not sure I can rely on it but checked with Don Hume again and this time I got this response below. I have asked for a copy of any catalog or such showing it.

"This is our Fairfax Brown Color and the No. 6 was made for the Colt Official Police .38 cal gun model with a 4” barrel".
Thank you!!

The newest chart I've bothered to save is 2012 that does have some variation - and many additions - from this, but still no number 6.

Cue Patrick McGoohan. I am not a number...!!!!

1996 Fit Chart

I scanned the fit chart from a 1996 Hume catalog. I'd guess I've never scanned it before because the catalog is a poor effort likely reflecting changes in management.

Still no number 6 and number 8 for Detective Special has also disappeared. The Colt Detective Special is now included in the #3 for S&W J frames. As with the late 50's Bucheimer Perfect Fit including several disparate frame sizes in one holster size -- perhaps not so perfect anymore.
